Easy weaning

How do piglets experience weaning?

The weaning process out of a piglet's point of view is of course very stressful. At one moment, suddenly your mother is gone. You have to find your own feed and water and you are in a new pen. With new pan mates who want to fight you. The first days after weaning, you must be the mother of these piglets and make sure that they will eat and drink. If you do this perfectly you will be responsible for the best result ever. These piglets are used to suckle the udders least 25 times a day and they always drink together. The ideal picture after weaning is that piglets also eat together and many times per day.

How to maintain feed intake after weaning?

For good healthy piglets and good productivity it is very important that piglets keep on eating also after weaning. We want them to take in feed already within the first hours after weaning. In the weaning house you should start with the same feed as you already used in the farrowing house. The best way to stimulate the feed intake is by creating activity. Offer these piglets a few times a day new creep feed within the trough. You can stimulate piglets eating together by using the big round troughs.

How to reach a good water intake?

For a good feed intake water is very important and these piglets need approximately 1 liter of water per 10 kg bodyweight. To make sure these piglets drink enough we offer them the first days after weaning extra water in a round trough. To support the feed intake, especially for the smaller and younger piglets, you can mix some water and feed and offer it in an open trough.

How to ensure a good climate in the weaning?

For these young piglets a good climate is essential. Enough warmth and comfort are very important. To assess climate you should look at the behavior of the piglets and not only check the temperature of the department. If piglets are resting comfortably in the resting area the climate is probably perfect. If piglets are piled up against the wall, than the climate is not OK. You should check for draught and check the temperature and humidity. Check the settings of your climate computer and ask a climate expert for advice. Your management around weaning has been successful when already within a couple of days after weaning your piglets are showing the first signs of becoming a good finisher.
